How to Make the Perfect Plot in Fiction?

~Ananya Nair

Writing a fictional tale is an exciting venture that enables you to let your mind run wild as you construct characters and worlds. Fictional settings have a way of depicting circumstances that appear to be distinct from our own. Their real essence, however, persists in challenging the social concepts and rudimentary principles that exist in this society. To put it simply, fiction, particularly the fantasy category, portrays both good and evil in a very appealing manner. People begin to reflect and relate those teachings to real life when their curiosity is piqued.

While there is no ironclad set of rules for impactful fiction writing, there are several commonly used methods to help you get started, write better, and craft a wonderful tale. It requires dedication and hard effort to write great fiction, writing a book is a difficult task, let alone revising, releasing, and promoting it. The fictional writing guidelines provided below should make the first portion of your monumental job a little easier.

  1. Do not limit yourself to a single subject (In reading or writing). Even if you have a favourite subject, venture outside of it on occasion to avoid becoming bogged down by cliches.

  2. When composing fiction, it only provides viewers with the knowledge they require at the time. The supporting elements, such as the backstory, should be hidden, much like the bulk of an iceberg beneath the water's surface. This keeps readers from becoming overwhelmed with knowledge and allows them to fill in the gaps with their imagination.

  3. Characters can be written by drawing influence from real life as well. Consider your peers, family, and colleagues. You can create an ensemble of convincing characters by magnifying and combining the strongest elements of their personalities.

  4. Learn how to disclose character details to raise tension in your narrative. Your primary characters' actions, motivations, and aims should be informed by their backstory. Determine which POV—first or third person—best compliments the character's perception of events.

  5. Develop a unique style. Your narrator ought not to come across as pleasant and approachable in the first few pages, only to become objective and distant later. The tone of your narrator's speech should complement the substance of your work.

  6. To give your tale a humanistic feel, imbue it with complex themes. Themes include sacrifice, salvation, rebirth, life and death, faith, fate, and so on. These are the large clouds that loom over your narrative.

  7. Do not compose for the sake of the industry. Bank on your emotions. You can create a framework before, during, or after you have completed your initial draft. It will give you a strategy, which is a very useful instrument to have at your command. However, a laid-out plan is not always required. Try your hand at explorative and impulse writing as well!

  8. Every excellent narrative contains a transformation. The characters evolve, the universe evolves, and ideally, the reader evolves as well. Make an effort to write a tale that is both striking and gratifying. Reading a novel and knowing precisely what's going to occur is still tolerable but what’s worse is reading a novel and feeling frustrated at the conclusion — as if what happened wasn't meant to happen. Your viewers will become emotionally invested in your tale. Pay attention to creating tension before shattering it.

  9. Subplots should be added to your primary plot. In actual life, a lot is going on at once. While the characters are all attempting to be saved from the aliens, relationships bloom, traitors plot, and alliances form. There is a distinction to be made between a subplot and a digression. Do not take too many detours. It's fine to delve into different aspects of your tale while writing it, but you have to eventually distil it down to its essence.

  10. Keep the passion for writing alive. If you don't appreciate writing, perhaps it's not for you. However, and this is critical, there will be parts of a large writing job that will be tedious, dull, or challenging. Keep going, and the project will ultimately become interesting again. You'll discover your path if you're willing to experiment.

Fiction effectively serves as a form of psychological remedy, spanning our thoughts and providing us with an experience of repose and refinement. Everyone, from kids to adults, can have this experience if we immerse ourselves in these realms. Fiction not only allows us to retreat into our dreams, but it also allows us to engage with the facts of life that we often ignore due to dread and doubt.
