The protagonist of my fictional novel is Rumki Shrimani. Her husband is Arjun Shrimani. Throughout the novel, Rumki narrates her story in the first person. She is a retired corporate officer. Rumki married Arjun, despite him being a simple clerk chosen by her father, because he did not take a dowry.
Arjun promised that he would not prevent her from taking care of her sisters, even after marriage.
Being extremely poor and having been humiliated by her relatives since childhood had left deep scars on her psyche. She had a perception that if her husband were not a thief or a characterless, life would be picture-perfect. But others, and even her husband, have repeatedly humiliated her, even in front of her son, Akash. Akash urged her to decide on divorce, but in Rumkis view, Marriage builds a home; divorce is the symbol of its destruction.
If his mother were divorced, Akash would be the one facing questions. According to Rumki, Patience bears good fruit.
She has written the novel in the style of a diary. It is not a daily log; rather, on certain days, a particular feeling, an actresss Reel Name from a TV series, or an incident that stirs her memory, carries her away from the present into the past.
An incident at their housing complex, on the day of the Vishwakarma Puja, while performing the worship of vehicle, inspired her to write. Why and under what circumstances she bought two vehicles, the formalities of purchasing a car in Shillong being a West Bengal woman officer, descriptions of the roads and nature of Shillong, the driver of the car bought in Kolkata, traffic jams, and so on, are all reflected in her writing. The present and past of the various events are woven together, as if two ends of a garland.
A human being must achieve his goal in spite of being humiliated throughout his life, if he has intellect, diligent effort and is blessed by THE ALMIGHTY.
Whether ultimately Rumki was able to reach her goal?
The end of this novel ends with this answer.
